A heartwarming look at a community of gathered diners, and proprietors of a small specialty Oden restaurant.
Oden is a Japanese winter hotpot dish consisting of several ingredients such as boiled eggs, daikon radish, konjac, tofu and processed fishcakes stewed in a light, soy-flavored dashi broth. Near Ishiteji Temple on the outskirts of Matsuyama City in Ehime Prefecture, which is Temple 51 of the Shikoku Island 88 Temple Pilgrimage, there is a small oden restaurant, “Habotan (Flowering Cabbage)” which boasts over a 40-year history. The restaurant’s longevity is in some part due to its delicious food, cheap prices, ramshackle ambience and the charms of its proprietress. But there’s also an unusual character, the enigmatic “General”.
Watch a little pocket of Japanese society reveal itself in this touching documentary.
